Our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in our concert last night! Congratulations to Elyane Laussade (pictured here with our musical director, Joannes Roose) for performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 with such grace and control (and good memory… imagine how many notes there are in 40 minutes of Chopin). Bravo, Elyane! And Beethoven’s 5th was such a joy to play. What would we do without classical music? Thank you and congratulations to you all!
We are delighted to share our news that The Melbourne Sinfonia is supporting a new initiative at the Gatehouse Centre, Royal Children’s Hospital. We have contributed $8,000 which comprises money we have raised from our concerts over recent years.
The project will involve Gatehouse developing educational and training resources to be used for individual and group sessions, to prepare traumatised and vulnerable young people for a happier and safer future. Feedback from a recent trial was overwhelmingly positive. Benefits to patients will include increased awareness of issues relating to sexual exploitation, violence and sexual health; education about healthy relationships, safety and consent; an opportunity to address past trauma in a safe, non-threatening, therapeutic environment; and fewer presentations to RCH emergency.
A core element of the project will be working with services in Melbourne that support ‘at risk’ youth, such as juvenile justice, child protection and police. It is hoped that Gatehouse will help deliver this program to other RCH departments, and across the state and nationally.
On behalf of the orchestra and Gatehouse, thank you to all of our supporters, both past and present, who have contributed to this valuable project.
After a summer break, we will soon start rehearsing for our first concert of 2017.
The program for Friday, 24 March will feature:
- Weber – Der Freischütz overture
- Arias – we welcome back soprano Lee Abrahmsen
- Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4
You can purchase tickets, including an annual 2017 subscription (great value!) here.
For those on Facebook, please help us spread the word and share our event!
What a wonderful concert on Friday to end the year! Bravo to Glenn Riddle for his inspiring performance of the epic Brahms Piano Concerto No.1.
As always, sincere thanks to our musical director Joannes Roose, our players, all volunteers and our audience. It’s always a team effort to produce these concerts.

We look forward to seeing you there!
A huge thank you to everyone involved in our Beethoven concert on Friday evening. It was fantastic performing to such an appreciative audience, all for a good cause – supporting Gatehouse at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
