It’s February, meaning the end of our summer break and the beginning of our 2020 concert season. Our first concert of the year on Friday, 20th March will feature this thoughtfully selected program spanning the Baroque, Romantic and Modern eras:

Happy New Year… and a trip down memory lane

The Melbourne Sinfonia wishes everyone a very Happy and Musical New Year. Thank you all for making our 2019 concerts so enjoyable.

We can’t end the year without a trip down memory lane, because 2019 was our 30th anniversary year! We began as the Collingwood Chamber Orchestra, founded by Kevin Morgan in 1989 with the support of the Collingwood council. The group first rehearsed at the Organ Factory Theatre in Collingwood and then at Princes Hill Primary School. The first rehearsal comprised 9 string players and the group made its debut at Collingwood Senior Citizens Hall with 14 players. Later concerts were held in the Collingwood Town Hall.

Our name changed to The Melbourne Sinfonia in late 1990 and concerts moved to Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne, where they remained until November 2011. With Melba Hall no longer available, the venue changed to the James Tatoulis Auditorium at MLC.

Joannes Roose has been our Musical Director and Principal Conductor since 1998.

Since 2004 we have been an Auxiliary of the Royal Children’s Hospital. Our unique position as a fundraiser for the RCH unites us, as we join in the spirit of enjoying music for a good cause. We currently support the RCH Gatehouse Centre which provides a crisis service and ongoing support for children and adolescents who have been sexually abused. Gatehouse helps these vulnerable young people develop resilience and other coping skills.

We look forward to another year of music. Our 2020 concert dates are 20 March, 12 June, 4 September and 27 November.

What a wonderful evening of music at our concert on 29th November – we ended the year on a positive note! Thank you to our musicians, volunteers, audience and our Musical Director, Joannes.

Special congratulations to Lee Abrahmsen for her beautiful Mozart arias. There was lots of praise for Lee – her richness and clarity of tone, emotional connection to the music and stage presence. Bravo, Lee!

We very much enjoyed performing Beethoven’s 4th symphony, which is often overshadowed by his 3rd and 5th. The last movement was a speedy way to end the concert! Thank you and well done to all.

Thank you to everyone involved in our concert on 6 September – the musicians, our Musical Director Joannes Roose, our audience, and of course our dedicated volunteers. We hope you all enjoyed the evening. Bravo to our guest soloist, Anne-Marie Johnson!

Our next concert on Friday, 6 September 2019 will feature the following program:

Mendelssohn ~ Violin Concerto in E Minor with soloist Anne-Marie Johnson
Brahms ~ Symphony No. 3

Our online ticket prices are $26 adults / $13 students (children free) and can be purchased here. We also sell tickets at the door for $30 / $15 (cash only).

The concert will commence at 8pm at the James Tatoulis Auditorium, Methodist Ladies’ College, Kew.
