New players
We’re always looking for new musicians, particularly in the string sections. We are a strong community of friendly musicians of all ages and backgrounds, and enjoy working together to perform music for a worthy cause.
While we don’t hold auditions, we work on the principle that players self-regulate. We play difficult pieces in their original version to a high standard of performance, and players should feel comfortable in their ability to perform symphonic music from the baroque, classical, romantic and modern repertoire. As a guide, we suggest a standard of Grade 7 AMEB (or equivalent) with orchestral experience and a commitment to attend all rehearsals.
If you would like to join The Melbourne Sinfonia, please email our Orchestral Manager at: orchestralmanager@melbournesinfonia.org.au. If we don’t have a suitable vacancy for you, we have a waiting list.
Rehearsal information for current players
We rehearse on scheduled Wednesday evenings at Flemington Primary School, cnr of Mount Alexander Road and Padman Lane, Flemington. Rehearsals start at 7:45pm sharp and conclude at 10:30pm, with a break for supper. Please arrive by 7:30pm to allow time to set up. Limited free parking is available on site. Music is provided but BYO music stand.
Player fee
We ask all players to pay $30 for each concert in which they perform. This fee contributes to the orchestra’s operating expenses (including hire of venues, music and instruments; audit fees and printing costs) and enables us to donate to the RCH Gatehouse Centre, which supports children and adolescents who have been sexually abused.
Please pay your $30 fee prior to each concert. Note that it is not tax-deductible.
